Just the same way Reddit was brilliant with introducing Gen 1, they've now ruined it.

Reddit did a brilliant thing. Making Collectibles accessible for everyone. People are buying items without even knowing it's blockchain technology. Almost perfect marketing, using the hype, with seemingly low effort. I didn't like NFTs at all but Reddit opened my eyes.
The result: people buying and holding collectibles because they love them.
The recent drop though smells like incompetence. It was well known that Reddit has a bot problem and certain folks didn't even keep it a secret that they will use bots to make easy profits on the secondary market. Reddit ignored all warnings and gave a huge percentage of generation 3 collectibles to scalpers, a simple (individual) captcha could've solved this.
All the brilliance from the beginning is now turned into the opposite. No option to buy a beloved Avatar because you don't want to leave $800 with some shady guy on Opensea.
People now see it as a scam again, ruled by bots and scalpers. A frustrating experience for many.
I would suggest a solution, but maybe I'm mistaken. Why not implement a shop where you can chose your favorites and Reddit does some kind of lottery? If you don't buy it within 3 days it will go to the shop.
